Considering going to a reformer Pilates class but have no idea where to start? Is it actually good for you? Is it harder than mat Pilates? Is it just another flash-in-the-pan fitness trend? I hear you! As a bona fide reformer Pilates convert (and now instructor), I’ve answered all your burning questions about reformer Pilates and have some top tips on everything I wish I knew before I started!

First things first – What is Reformer Pilates?

Here’s the TLDR: Reformer Pilates is an exercise method combining the principles of classic mat Pilates with the use of a specialised machine called a reformer. This method is known for its ability to provide a full-body workout, targeting various muscle groups and improving overall fitness levels. 5 Things you should know before you start Reformer Pilates

1. Don’t be afraid of the lingo.

When you start anything new, there’s a lot of new stuff to learn!

But this is exactly why you’re here, to try something new!

So do your Pilates class, and have fun! You might be a bit weirded out about “feet in straps” or “hundreds” because you’ve never heard of them before, but trust me you’re going to love it!

2. Don’t let your ego stop you from taking the modifications.

We all have different strength and fitness levels and how amazing is it that we are all different?!

Maybe you just aren’t feeling your strongest on a particular day. (In fact, did you know your menstrual cycle stage can impact your strength and endurance levels?)

We understand that sometimes you just need to take an easier option or a modification —and that’s okay! Reformer Pilates is a versatile full body workout that caters to virtually every fitness levels, and modifications are there for a reason. As a long time Pilates lover and teacher, I even take the modifications!

3. Pilates is not a cushy workout, you will feel it!

I often get asked, “is Pilates hard?” and the answer is: Yes, Pilates is hard. Good hard. You will feel muscles you didn’t know you had and the physical and mental benefits will be so worth it!

Reformer Pilates not only builds core strength but also enhances flexibility, balance, and overall physical and mental well-being, giving you a sense of mind-body connectedness, control and overall strength. It’s honestly a transformative experience for body and spirit – especially when you do it surrounded by like minded people.

4. Lack of sweat doesn’t mean you’re not working.

If you have never tried reformer Pilates before, it can be hard to imagine how a workout that does not leave you drenched in sweat can produce results. But trust us, it does! 

A good reformer session will leave you feeling energised and will get all your major muscle groups firing. Think of it as a combined strength training, stretching and mind body connectedness class. 

Trust us, you will feel this in the morning.

5. You don’t have to “get in shape” to start Pilates!

Pilates is for everyone, it meets you exactly where you are. You might be a former gym junkie who hasn’t kept up with your workouts and is shy about not feeling your best. Or maybe you have never really exercised before but you want to start, it is never too late!

Will the Pilates instructor have time to help me during the class?

Absolutely! Our Pilates class sizes are small, allowing your instructor to check your form and provide personalised instruction. We know it can feel intimidating at first, but you’ll get the hang of it and everyone was a beginner once! We’re always on hand to help. 

Are there different kinds of Reformer Pilates classes?

Yes! There are different types of Reformer Pilates classes including classes that build strength, improve flexibility and provide a cardiovascular workout. Here are the different classes we offer at Muse Pilates:
